A Carat Duchatelet vehicle is recognisable by its lines, its proportions, its materials and its standard of finish.
But behind every vehicle we build there are, above all, hands at work. Precise work, sometimes technical, sometimes purely hand-craft, and often invisible once the car is finished.
There are the men and women who draw, cut, shape, assemble, fit, stitch, paint and inspect. So many different skills, all held to the same single standard.
Detail as signature
At Carat Duchatelet, nothing is ever truly standard.
Every project brings its own constraints. Every conversion means understanding the car, adapting it, sometimes reinventing a solution altogether, all while respecting its original identity.
That calls for technical mastery, of course.
But it also calls for an eye.
Understanding how a material behaves. Anticipating a fit. Reworking a part by a few millimetres. Finding the right balance between safety, comfort, appearance and discretion.
Details that can seem insignificant on their own, but that make all the difference once they come together.
Crafts that echo one another
No Carat Duchatelet takes shape alone.
It passes from trade to trade, from workshop to workshop, from one expertise to the next.
Engineering prepares what hands will later make. Sheet metal work reshapes the structure. The armour is integrated into the car. Paint restores a flawless finish. Assembly brings the parts together. Trim and cabinetmaking add that particular dimension where technique meets the craftsman’s hand.
Every stage depends on the one before it. Each person, in turn, stands behind the work entrusted to them.
Some of the most important operations disappear completely once the vehicle is finished.
A reinforcement will be covered over.
A structural modification will become invisible.
A bespoke part will look as though it had always been there.
That, too, is our craft.
Making sure the complexity never shows.
That the conversion looks natural.
That behind all the technical sophistication, the only thing left for someone seeing the car for the first time is a sense of inevitability.
What the hands know
Tools change. Technology advances. Vehicles grow ever more complex.
And yet experience remains irreplaceable.
It can take years to recognise at a glance what needs adjusting, to understand how a material will behave, or to know how far a part can be worked.
At Carat Duchatelet, that experience is built project by project.
And it is shared.
Between generations, between trades, between colleagues.
That is how a craft evolves without losing what makes it what it is.
Behind every Carat
Since 1968, our House has designed and built vehicles for requirements that lie far outside the ordinary.
Over the decades, the models have changed.
The techniques have been refined.
Expectations have grown ever more demanding.
But at the centre of every project, one thing remains the same: the women and men who bring their expertise to a vehicle that will never be built twice.
Through this series of portraits, we wanted to show a few of those faces.
The hands that shape Carat Duchatelet, day after day.
Always Unique.
